Record Store Day 2017: Watch St. Vincent become official ambassador
Following its inception in 2007, Record Store Day typically names a well-known musician or band as it's official "ambassador." It's then that artist's duty to help promote the day, usually with some sort of video announcement to kick off the run-up to the big shindig in April. They even get their own logo and everything.
Today, St. Vincent was named the official 2017 ambassador for Record Store Day, which is happening on April 22, with a Funny or Die video. St. Vincent is awesome, of course, and the announcement video is alright, but what struck me was this is the first time in the event's decade of existence that a lady has been named as ambassador of Record Store Day. It's not something I'd usually call out, but given how many great musicians are out there, it's a little surprising it's taken this long.
To be fair, the ambassador thing didn't start until 2009, but still. Previous Record Store Day ambassadors have included Eagles of Death Metal's Jesse Hughes (2009), Queens of the Stone Age's Joshua Homme (2010), Ozzy Osbourne (2011), Iggy Pop (2012), Jack White (2013), Chuck D (2014), Dave Grohl (2015), and Metallica (2016).
Anyways, given the news, you can probably at least count on some sort of St. Vincent exclusive Record Store Day release when the full list is announced in the upcoming months. Start saving your cash now.
