Listen: Hudson Mohawke's Valentine's Day Slow Jams Mix
Whether you're looking for a dinner soundtrack, songs to play in the background as you unwind, or just a little something to set the mood, finding the right music for Valentine's Day can be tough.
Give it up, then, for Hudson Mohawke. The Scottish DJ and producer, who has worked with everyone from Kanye West to John Legend, today dropped his 10th consecutive mix of slow jams to commemorate Valentine's Day.
What's great about Mohawke's Valentine's Day mixes is that they're not typically comprised of tracks you have an overwhelming familiarity with. These aren't jams that have been played 1000x times on your local oldies or R&B radio stations. Many of them aren't going to turn up on some random Spotify "Songs for Lovers" playlist.
In fact, most of the songs on his slow jams mixes I've never heard before. On this latest mix, for instance, I had to break out Shazam to discover songs like "In The Mood" by Tyrone Davis or "Steal Away" by The Montgomery Express.
So for music nerds, hearing a series of slow jams by obscure or occasionally forgotten R&B, blues, and soul artists is a fun excuse to geek out. When you combine that with how great these songs sound subtly blaring from speakers as you either hang out with your love or simply kick back and relax on Valentine's Day, Mohawke deserves special thanks.
Plus, it takes a real commitment to do anything for 10 years. That's a greater stretch of time than most people's high school and college experiences combined. As for romantic relationships, well, there's not many that are able to flourish for a decade. I've been enjoying these mixes for the past 10 years, and don't want to imagine a Valentine's Day without them now.
Go ahead and listen to the latest mix below, as well as a couple other of Mohawke's Valentine's Day mixes from years past.
